A classic Indian masala chai made using Assam leaves and only the high quality spices. For a truly authentic masala chai make in the traditional way with milk and sugar on the stove.
To brew Masala Chai the traditional method:
- Use 1tsp of Black Chai to half a mug of hot water in a pan on the hob.
- Leave to infuse for at least 5-10mins.
- Add half a mug of milk (traditionally a high fat cows milk but plant based milks such as almond give a great depth of flavour) and sweeten to taste.
- Simmer gently, strain into your mug and enjoy!
This recipe can be scaled up the milk : water ratio can be changed to taste.
Chai has been drunk in India in this way since the 1830s, but was reserved for the wealthy due to the high cost of the tea. It wasn't until the early 1900s that it became more widely consumed and now India is renowned for it's staple - masala chai, which can be found on every corner throughout India!
Ingredients: Indian Assam Black Tea, Ginger, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Cloves, Chilli
Preparation: Steep 1tsp per cup for 3-5 minutes in 88-100°C water.
